At the United Nations Ocean Conference in June, the Islas Secas Foundation — an affiliate of The Moore Charitable Foundation — joined an impressive group of NGOs, philanthropic organizations and governments in contributing to a $150 million pledge to support a marine conservation initiative in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.

Spanning from Costa Rica and Panama to the north and Colombia and Ecuador to the south, the Eastern Tropical Pacific hosts some of the world’s most productive, biologically diverse, and ecologically significant marine environments.

This initiative aims to protect those unique marine environments by strengthening the Eastern Tropical Marine Corridor (CMAR) through the establishment of a transboundary biosphere reserve covering 193,000 square miles of ocean — an area larger than Spain.

Safeguarding pathways between the region’s linked biological hotspots will protect the tuna, sharks, rays, whales, birds, sea turtles, and many other wildlife that rely on these corridors to feed, gather, and reproduce.

The Islas Secas Foundation is a proud member of this important coalition, which will help ensure that the Eastern Tropical Pacific will continue to be a thriving habitat for diverse marine life.
