World Biodiversity Day 2025: Restoring Balance Through Conservation
On World Biodiversity Day, we honor the intricate web of life that sustains our planet, from the trees and mangroves that filter our air and water to coral reefs that provide habitats for marine species. Biodiversity is the bedrock of a healthy, resilient Earth.
This balance is under threat. The World Wildlife Fund reported in 2024 that wildlife populations have declined by 73% in the last 50 years. Habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and overdevelopment are accelerating species extinction and weakening ecosystems’ ability to adapt and thrive — events that directly threaten our health and livelihoods.
Conservation is a powerful tool in protecting biodiversity. The Moore Charitable Foundation partners with organizations working to defend and restore critical habitats such as wetlands, forests, rivers, coastlines, and oceans — which are among the most biodiverse places on our planet.
Through our grantees, we support efforts to preserve biodiverse ecosystems, including:
· Defend the West Su and the Susitna River Coalition, which are leading efforts to stop the proposed West Susitna Access Road and safeguard the wild, salmon-rich Susitna River and surrounding ecosystems in Alaska.
· The Southern Environmental Law Center, working to protect Southeastern U.S. forests and communities from clear cutting driven by industrial biomass, exposing UK policies and carbon accounting loopholes that wrongly classify wood pellets as “renewable energy.”
· The Oxygen Project, a youth-driven advocacy platform mobilizing public support to defend critical ecosystems, including the carbon-rich mangroves of Pacific Panama.
· The Perry Institute of Marine Science, which is advancing large-scale mangrove restoration, scientific research, and local collaboration as a core member of the Bahamas Mangrove Alliance.
Promoting biodiversity means protecting our climate, our communities, and the many species that make up healthy ecosystems. The Moore Charitable Foundation remains committed to advancing conservation solutions that preserve this natural balance.
