World Oceans Day 2025: Sustaining Our Oceans and Our Future
The ocean sustains life on Earth, supporting billions of people, wildlife, and ecosystems. From producing half of the world’s oxygen to providing habitat to marine species, oceans play an important part in maintaining our planet’s essential functions. Yet only 8% of the ocean is legally protected, leaving vast areas at risk.
On World Oceans Day, we recognize both the beauty and the vulnerability of our marine ecosystems, and the urgent need to conserve them. Today, oceans are facing mounting threats from seabed mining; illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing; offshore drilling; and coral bleaching and disease. The health of our ocean — and ultimately our planet — depends on our commitment to ocean conservation and change.
The Moore Charitable Foundation is proud to support grantees who are leaders in marine conservation, including:
- Oceans 5, a global funder’s collaborative focused on combatting illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, expanding marine protected areas, and advancing science-based conservation policies.
- Shark Conservation Fund, a global initiative focused on protecting sharks and rays through stronger policies, science-based fisheries management, and reduced demand for shark products.
- MarViva, which drives marine planning and promotes sustainable governance in the Eastern Tropical Pacific through science, policy, advocacy, and stakeholder collaboration.
- Wetlands International, which supports the protection and restoration of mangroves in the Chiriquí region of Panama to protect biodiversity, strengthen resilience, and support livelihoods.
- Bahamas Reef Environmental Education Foundation (BREEF), which works to empower local ocean stewardship and the restoration of coral reefs and mangroves through education, community engagement, and science.
- Perry Institute for Marine Science, which advances marine research and coral restoration initiatives through community-based strategies in The Bahamas.
On World Oceans Day, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing the science and solutions needed to conserve our oceans and the vital resources they provide.
